Exclusive Resorts and an Eclectic Vibe Make Asheville an Atypical Mountain Town.
If you’re short on time but long to get away for an autumn weekend road trip, we’ve got you covered with ideas from local travel advisor Jen Martin.
An independent affiliate of Travel Experts, a leading Virtuoso member agency, Martin has the inside scoop on many popular weekend getaway destinations that are easily accessible from Franklin. As she exclusively books 4- and 5-star travel for clients, each is complete with luxury accommodations and amenities galore. They also offer beautiful surroundings, great food and plenty of sights and activities for the entire family to enjoy.
“These locations are perfect for people looking for long weekend trips,” she says. “They could be done in three days but you could also easily extend it to four or five days, up to a week there’s so much to do,” says Martin.
One such destination is …
… Asheville, North Carolina.
Asheville is a city that can’t be bound by labels. That’s because it’s a city that has it all. And it’s what makes it perfect for a family getaway, no matter how different the interests of your bunch may be.
Here you’ll find culture, history, adventure, cuisine and the only labels the city will let slide, those of its numerous craft beers. What’s more, it’s all set in a picturesque mountain backdrop.
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville boasts a storied history and culture dating back to the 1700s with its humble beginnings as a primitive outpost travelled through by Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. The railroad transformed the city in the 1880s setting off an era of prosperity as a resort destination for the affluent in the South. During this boom time a host of Neoclassical, Romanesque Revival and Art Deco buildings were created. Although the Depression hit the city hard, as a stroll through downtown will show, many of those beautiful structures still stand today.
Modern Asheville boasts a downtown with a vibrant art, music and food scene. Just beyond is an outdoor lover’s dream with the French Broad River nearby, thousands of public hiking trails, the tallest peaks east of the Mississippi, a rich biodiversity and endless spectacular views.
And the laid-back vibe and warm, welcoming people certainly can’t go without mention. In all, Asheville is ideal if you’re looking to unwind, enjoy time together and maybe have a few adventures along the way.
